The Magic of Draft

Well, now that I'm back on the blogging train, I figure I might as well try to keep some momentum, even if it's just a quick update about the minutiae of my day to day life.

Football kicked off today, which means another season of fretting over which Bengals player scored their lone touchdown. Just kidding, I don't have any Bengals on my fantasy squad. I like winning. I do have Aaron Rodgers, and while he did his usual amazing work, the Packers failed to notch the W. Oh well, I don't worry about that as much as I used too. Fantasy has slowly eroded my loyalty to any one team, as I'm more worried about individual performances. Also, I've been evolving as a Brewers fan for the last couple of years, and they've made me immune to losing.

Football as a whole is less important to me as it mostly takes place on Sunday afternoon, and I have taken up a new hobby that fills that time slot. Drafting Magic at the mall. I know it sounds nerdy, but it's a fun way to spend an afternoon playing games with entertaining people. I'd like to say I'm good at it, but I think luck has more to do with it. I do win on occasion, but i mostly just like the camaraderie. Growing my collection of cards doesn't hurt, either.

That's probably good for today.

Adolesence

Oh hey, Kevin's writing again. And what a surprise, the entry is about his favorite depressing topic: Girls. Specifically the lack of one in my life. Ever.

First some backstory. Last September I began working at Burrachos. There's an entry about that a couple back. This second job made me retire from musicals, and while I didn't miss it, some friends recently twisted my arm into coming back for one more show. Two weeks later I'm not loving the work involved in memorizing dance steps, but it's fun to be around girls again, if only for a few hours every night.

The problem: As is my custom, I seem to have befriended the high school crowd. I know, another shocker. Kevin likes 'em young. Eh, I am who I am. I refuse to apologize for it. It's not like I ever cross the line and actually do anything remotely illegal. Anyhoo, fun as they are, I don't spend all my time with the under 18 crowd. There is one girl who is 20, and today I had the pleasure of having a real conversation with her for about 20 minutes while we waited for our turn to dance. She's nice and has a great smile, and me being the funny guy I am, made her laugh a lot. This made me feel good about myself. Got that warm happy feeling.

Right, back to the point. It turns out she only just started dating a guy a week ago. One she met on OK Cupid. AUGHHHHHH!!!! I have been on that site for years, with no takers even remotely close to Carly. Love is a cruel mistress, not that I would know what love is, as it seems to enjoy hiding from me.

To thicken the plot, she gets me. Thicken isn't really the right word. It's more like twisting the knife. We talked today about what I really need is to find a girl who has the same adolescent mindset as me. I don't mean that in a dirty way, just someone who enjoys the simple things of life, like playing games and goofing off. You know, the stuff we used to do before adulthood got in the way. Maybe that doesn't make much sense, but seeing how no one reads this anyway, I guess it just doesn't matter.

Guess that pretty much closes out this depressing chapter.

My Dad, My Hero

Hey, not a lot of time, but some people have been inquiring about an update, so here it is.

Lately, my car has not been awesome. It has in fact been mildly frustrating. Not to go into too many details, but it sat at BestBuy for a couple of days, while myself and others took turns trying to fix it with little to no luck. Today, my Dad was able to fix it enough to get it back to my house, with only two stops along the way to re-repair it. He thinks maybe he can fix it Sunday, so here's hoping!

Anyway, I wanted to say that my Dad is the best because he came up to Eau Claire on a cold rainy day and basically saved me from having to call a tow-truck. He's a farmer, so he doesn't have a ton of free time, and it just makes me happy knowing he's there for me.

I know you don't read this, but I love you, Dad!

Winning

Hey blogger universe!
I am very frustrated right now. There are very few downsides in my current living arrangement, but there is one very big one. Whenever I try to have a serious discussion/debate with the roomies, it always ends in disaster. The problem is that they refuse to admit that they're ever wrong, and most of the time they resort to non-relevant extreme methods to "win".
One of my favorites was "Boo!" Whenever I'd try to say anything, regardless of how logical it was, the answer they had was "boo". The current method is to throw out something so ridiculously outlandishly false that it makes me throw something just as ridiculous back so that they'll see how stupid they sound. This rarely works, but does have the upside of being an argument-ender, as people usually get too upset to continue. It's just difficult, because I'm actually fond of having serious conversations, just not with people who can't admit they're wrong.

In the less depressing news department, Fantasy Football is going full swing, and Week One looks like it'll be a winner! The Packers had an explosive first game, which would normally be good, but since I have no Packers on my team and my opponent had 3, it wasn't great for me personally. Still happy they won, and the rest of my team managed to pull off a victory anyway.

Also, Mary Ellen hosted Second Saturday this month, and while my family was at a wedding and unable to attend, we still had a decent turn out, and I got in some serious volleyball time.

Importing Hotness

Heeeeeeyyy!

Decided to throw some more knowledge your way. I was working last night (at Kohls), and I made some observations. Ok, actually I only made one observation. All foreign exchange student are better looking than the host family's daughter. There were three separate instances where they came through my line, and it made me want to become a host family...

that's all.

Partnership

Apologies to my loyal followers. All two of you. Seriously folks, I feel bad for promising more, and then dropping you altogether. Let's try and correct this.

Probably be best to start with a few updates. I got the job at Burrachos, and I like it. It's flexible with my scheduling, and it seems easy enough. Hopefully they like me as well, and this is the start of a long and beneficial partnership.

Speaking of partnerships, albeit not long and beneficial ones, things are pretty much done with the OKC girl. It's for the best. She was definitely wanting more on the sex side of things, and since I pretty much draw the line at cuddling, it wasn't going to work out. Curse me and my morals.

I had designs on making this longer, but it's late and I'm drinking.

Update on the OKC Girl

After a very fun weekend, one in which I've made solid headway with a possible girlfriend, I decided it was time for an update.

Saturday, I had the chance to discuss some things with one of my followers. She kind of shocked me by bringing up the subject of The Girl, because I haven't told anyone about her yet. I just feel like jumping the gun might jinx things. Anyway, we also discussed some other things, and I kind of wish we had talked more. On a side note, I bumped into her at Gordy's today while picking up chips for a family get together.

On the subject of the title, we've graduated to texting, and it seems like a possible movie date is imminent. All I know for sure so far is that I've had to empty my inbox once already...

In other news, those of you who follow my facebook feed are also aware that I've recently applied for a second job at Burrachos. The interviews are going well, but I'm not sure it will actually fit with my Kohl's schedule. I'm going to discuss it with my manager tomorrow, but I have a bad feeling that I'll have to tell Burrachos no. Sucky poos.

Welcome to the Future

Ok, here's the dealio. I WANT to write on here more. I really do. Problem: most of my deep thoughts occur while I'm laying in bed, not the most convenient time to record them. I've tried remedying that by logging on here before I go to bed, so I can write out what's on my mind.
This "solution" has hit it's own snag: OkCupid.

"What's OkCupid?" you say. Well, I'll tell you. It's this free dating website that my BFF Jeff told me about. I don't think any of you readers have met him, but that's off-topic, so maybe we can visit it in a later post.

Anyway, I know what you're thinking. "A dating website! This guys a loser. Can't even meet women." Well I have news for you: It's the 21st century, and this is the way we do it nowadays. My pastor is even supportive of the internet dating(henceforth to be referred to as IDate) movement. He feels God gave us this technology to help us meet the one He has for us. As long as you don't abuse it, and technology can be a great helper in the dating world. Also, I read somewhere that 1 in 5 marriages are couples who met online. So there, Stigma removed.

Where was I? Oh yeah, the reason I don't post every day. The way the whole IDate thing is different than real dating is that you don't meet in person write away, and in my experience you don't start texting for awhile either. You mostly write messages back and forth, finding out about each other, seeing if there's any chemistry there. Fact is, I'm having one very promising exchange with a girl (fingers crossed) and one spiritual discussion with another.

You have to understand, my typing skills suck. I can only do so much in one sitting, and OKCupid is Priority One.

The Twofer

So after some careful thought, especially after yesterday's tiny entry, I've decided that it's going to be more of a Blog-a-day WHEN I have time to actually write out something. While it seems this opens a pretty big loophole, I'll try to skip days only like yesterday when my time is tightly budgeted. Ok, got that out of the way, now for today's news.

Lunch today was at Subway, mostly because I wanted pulled pork, and that seemed like the easiest way to get some. Normally this wouldn't really be exciting, but after I had eaten the first half, I was staring at the second 6 inches and thinking it'd be nice if it was chicken-bacon-ranch. this led me to come up with a absolutely brilliant idea. Wouldn't it be nice if Subway let you do half-and-half subs? I understand that they're broken into different price brackets, but it seems if you pick two from the same section it shouldn't matter. I can't tell you how much I would enjoy eating a fresh pulled pork followed by a cool ranch covered chicken bacon sandwich. Subway, take note!

Also happening today, a nice afternoon visit with an old friend. Sometimes it's good to just meet up with pals from the past and talk about where life has taken us. Definitely an afternoon well spent. I recommend having all conversations about the past on playground equipment. Makes remembering more fun.

Not Enough Hours in the Day

Hey, not much time to write today. I'm doing laundry at the Parents house, and I work overnight, so this will be the first of what I'm sure will be many one to two paragraph posts over the course of this experiment. Sometimes my schedule will just not be conducive to writing out long philosophical thoughts.

Seeya tomorrow!

Blog-a-Day starting...NOW

Hey, new plan. I've decided that I will be updating this thing once a day for as long as I remember to do it. I figure that even if it's just a paragraph or two, I can think of something to write about everyday. I have a lot of things I think about, as well as several grievances it'd be nice to get out in the open. Let me tell you, I meet some stupid people in my line of work.

Today's topic will be the sweeping changes I would like to make in my life, although I'm guessing I won't actually take the initiative to implement most of them. Maybe someday, but I tend to have lots of big ideas and plans, and then fail to follow up.

First, I'm starting to get a spare tire, so I'd like to give up Snickers and Soda. Should also help in the money department, assuming I don't fill it with some other junk food. I'm thinking I'll get some peanut butter crackers from Sam's Club to fill in for the Snickers, and maybe some juice to replace the soda.

Second, I'm thinking about looking into a gym membership. I could also start doing pushups and situps, but a gym might be more fun. I just need to get my Ipod up and running so that I'll have something to listen too. Getting that fixed should also inspire me to walk to work more...I used too, but then it got so dang hot everyday.

That's all for today's entry.

Blog Post 2011: This time, it's for real.

Well, since I've deleted my previous last post, it looks like it's been forever since I wrote on here. Actually, even with that post it's been a long time. I always mean to write things, but I never seem to be near a computer when I have thoughts. I often think that it'd be nice to have a transcript of my daily thoughts that I could peruse, edit, and post on a regular basis. This would be especially helpful since my typing skills are atrocious. Thanks for nothing, Mavis Beacon.

I was planning on typing a long entry, but I forgot how hard this whole typing thing is, especially with this weird ergonomic keyboard Robert left us when he moved out. Also, it's after midnight, and can you really trust your thoughts at this time of day? I'm not sure some of the things I think about are necessarily appropriate for a blog setting. That being said, I've always been a proponent of saying what's on your mind. prevents a lot of confusion down the road, even if it means hurting some feelings in the immediate.

Tonight as I was laying in my bed, (yup, I got up to type this) my thoughts were on how fast time flies, and how little I've actually accomplished with my life. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the way things are, and there's a lot I wouldn't change, but not everything's perfect. Basically, I was thinking about me being almost 27, single, and living in a rented duplex with two other dudes who also have failed to do much with their respective lives, although one of them is making a solid effort at becoming a full fledged member of adult society. By that I mean he has a serious girlfriend, a couple jobs to earn some money, and is attempting to finish his degree so he can someday settle down and start a family. I respect that, and sometimes wish I had my life figured out.

Honestly, I don't think the college route is a viable option for me at this point. I realize the pay is not great, but I love my job at Kohl's, and think I could be happy doing it for the next 50 years. The problem is that I will eventually run out of roommates, and unless I figure out how to get these credit cards payed off, I'll never be able to afford a place of my own. Anyone got a basement they could let some foolish lad live in? I'm not currently in the market, but somewhere down the road I might be...

Once again, I promise to write more soon, but that is one promise I never seem to be able to keep.

Quick Entry

As you may have guessed, I have decided NOT to do any resolutions this year, that way I can't fail.
Also, I just haven't felt like writing anything. I still don't really have anything to say, but felt like putting something in here, just so people still know I'm around.

Sorry it's so short, but hopefully I will have a bigger post later.

Resolutions 2009--The Results

It would seem that I would (or should) be writing my NEW resolutions on this day; however, I have decided to report on last years, and write the 2010 resolutions next week. Here we go!

Resolution2009#1: Read More.
Being that this is an ambiguous sort of goal, I had set a number at 18. I am not at home right now to count, but I know I at least came close on this one. I spent a small fortune at Borders, but found it was well worth it. Most of the books I read were Non-Fiction, which I think makes them count for more, because I was learning at the same time. Some random titles that I read this past year, and would recommend:

Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street
A delightful read that not only covers Sesame Street, but also doubles as an unofficial bio for Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets. There's also a lot about the early days of PBS and children's television in general.

Emperors of Chocolate
This book should not be read unless you have a handy supply of your favorite candy nearby. It goes through every little detail of the forming of the two chocolate behemoths in America, Mars and Hershey, while also covering how the two interacted. This was my second time reading it, and it was even better the second time around.

More Than a Game: The Glorious Present and Uncertain Future of the NFL
I will admit that this book is only of interest if you actually like sports, specifically football. I do, and definitely feel better informed having read it. Some other sports related books I completed this year were The Yankee Years by Joe Torre, Black and Blue: a History of the NFC North, and multiple biographies of some of my favorite Wrestlers.

There were also a few Christian Living books, as well as some John Grisham novels, and more Sports magazines than you can shake a stick at. While I realize those are not books, they did take a lot of my reading time, so they should count for something.

On to Resolution2009#2: Scrapbook at least through 2008.
The only scrapbooking I accomplished this year was Chicago: The Musical. Alas, all of 2008 is still sitting in stacks in my scrapbook bin or even some still on the cameras. Lazy me.

Resolution2009#3: Reduce Debt.
This one is tricky. I don't think I actually reduced my debt load, but I did realize that I have a problem, and have taken steps to insure that I won't fall deeper. Hopefully by 2011 I'll have begun to reduce it.

Resolution2009#4: Get Married.
Whoops. Guess I was reaching just a little on this one...although I would have failed even if the goal had been to simply get a girlfriend.

Resolution2009#5: Make an Appearance on Couchcapades.
Never happened, but that's Libby's fault.

Resolution2009#6: Update the Blog.
In 2009, I updated this thing a total of 13 times. That's a little more than once a month, and if you cut out the Resolution entry, it was just 12 times, for an average of ONCE a month. Pathetic. Next year, we'll shoot for double that.

Resolution2009#7: Exercise Regularly.
I went jogging ONE time. I walked to church twice, and work once. Wow. 4 times. EPIC FAIL!

Tune in later for the 2010 Resolutions.

Future Thoughts

Every time I start thinking about the future it makes me sad. I like the way things are now. I Loved the way they used to be. Of course there are some things I like about the present, but when I refer to the past and future I'm talking about my family, mostly.

Just reading that confuses me a little, and I wrote it. Let me try to explain. I love to play games...cards, board, sports, you name it, I like to play it. The problem is it requires others to fully enjoy games. That's why I enjoy visiting my parents so much. My mom and sister will almost always be in the mood for a game, and sometimes there's other around as well. The only sad times I have there are when the games end. I'm almost always in favor of continuing on, but most people don't share my passion for games. I realize it's not the greatest thing in the world to be passionate about, but it's who I am, so I'm not going to fight it.

Anyway, the point is that I was thinking about what life will be like after September, and Sandy's wedding. She won't be live at home anymore, so my visits will lose the one thing I enjoy the most. And then because my mind works in funny ways, I think about when the time comes that either my dad sells the farm, or worse, dies, and then I won't even have the home to come home too.

It makes me long for the old days when computers didn't hog so much time. The days when we all lived at home and just had school to worry about. I'm grateful for all the fun memories I have as kid, especially the ones that involve playing with my family, even if I didn't always appreciate them at the time.

I realize that I can't stop time, but I just wish that things didn't change so much.

Sorry my Christmas post doesn't have a lot of cheer in it.

Random Writings

I'm never really sure what to write in here. You'd think it would be easy to come up with a subject seeing as my life is usually so busy I don't even have time to update this. Oh well...guess I'll just start typing and we'll see what happens.

Went to Jeff's last night for another fun cookout. Yes, I realize it's winter. This just in: Brats are good YEAR ROUND! who knew? Anyway, it's not like we hang out outside...just do the cooking there. And he has a deck, so it's not even a big deal. I would argue that winter cookouts are even more special, cuz in the summer EVERYONE has cookouts.

Just 5 more shopping days left before Christmas! I keep thinking work will slow down after that, until I remember that I know how to work customer service now, so I'll probably be doing thousands of returns. Fun times...

Of my 3 Fantasy Football teams, I only made the playoffs in one league, despite having more total points than anyone else. Sometimes life just isn't fair. Oh well, at least I have ONE team with a chance...

In a related bit of news, I'm predicting that the Packers knock the Saints off in the playoffs, only to lose to the Vikings who will go on to get Favre that second Super bowl ring. Favre 4ever!

Merry Christmas!

Cookies for Christmas

As I gear up for another round of New Years resolutions, I'm reminded of my old ones, specifically the one where I pledged to update this regularly. Unless "regularly" now means once every 3 months, I'm doing a terrible job. Look for me to rectify that in the coming days/weeks as I strive to get into the habit of telling the world about my life. The "world" being Mary Ellen and Lindsey, as they are apparently the only readers.

On to the subject of this blog: Christmas cookies! Yum!
On one Saturday in December every year my parents house is filled with a number of aunts and grandmas and such who are intent on making every kind of cookie imaginable. I usually try to make an appearance, not so much for the baking part, but more for the taking a bucket of fresh cookies home part.

That day just happens to be tomorrow.

The Triumphant Return...sorta

Actually, it's not really triumphant. More like sneaking in with my tail tucked between my legs. so much for keeping this bad boy updated.

So much new stuff to write about...the hair stayed shaved off through the month of July, but then I had to grow it back for Chicago the musical. I did like the bald look, and it was easy to take care of, so it will probably return next summer. Guess I'm over that mullet phase.

In the musical realm, I just watched Seussical yesterday, starring my good friend Libby as Horton the Elephant. It was less than impressive...but the costumes were pretty cool. It was also nice to hang out with Jackie and Kayla. When you're a single guy like me, it's usually fun to do things with girls, even when THEY are in relationships. One of these days, God will bring someone for me, but until then it's nice to have a collection [of girls] to go do stuff with.

The tv show thing previously mentioned was a complete and utter failure, mostly because I never took the time to actually do it. It's not like I didn't have the time...I could have played fewer video games...but I just never got around to it.

That's all for now.

Summer Daze

Well well well. So much for updating within a month. I may have missed THAT deadline by a week...or two. Whoops. Rest assured, I am still working on the whole Which-TV-Show-is-better thing. I even made a bracket for it. I've just been busy with other things, and feel that there will be time for that later this year, like when the snow returns. For now, I'm really enjoying the summer.

Anyway, felt like stopping by and putting SOMETHING here...just in case anyone actually still reads this. Maybe when we get a better computer setup, I'll post more often.

oh, and I shaved my head for the summer.

Entourage versus Numb3rs (sorta)

So this is going to be a slightly unorthodox post in that it won't be about me, but about two shows I have recently started watching. It's been a little while since I watched the first season of Entourage, and I've only seen the one versus two of Numbers, but I figure if it wasn't memorable enough for me to remember the fine points, then it probably doesn't deserve to be considered as favorably.

And now as I was typing that, I came up with a BRILLIANT idea...well, at least an entertaining one. I'm going to make a list of all the tv shows I have seen, and compare them, March Madness style until I come out with an ultimate champion. Sort of a poor mans guide to what you should watch(and is worth spending your money on) and letting you know what you should avoid entirely.

Compiling this list, as well as all the hard data I will need might take a bit, and so I have to cut this short, but rest assured, within a month I will at least have started posting the results here.

Cheerio!
Kevin
